Large-scale exercise in Eibiswald: Rotkreuz saves apprentices in an emergency

At the end of October, a comprehensive major accident drill by the Red Cross district office took place in the Eibiswald apprentice house. The aim of this exercise was to evacuate around 320 apprentices from the building after an alarm was raised about smoke. At the same time, several injured people had to be rescued and given appropriate care. The emergency team was also responsible for caring for those who were not injured.

The exercise included more than 50 committed Red Cross employees from the areas of emergency services and crisis intervention as well as some (emergency) doctors. The local fire departments from Eibiswald and Hörmsdorf as well as the police were also actively involved. The residents of the apprentice house and their support staff also played an important role during the operation.

Efficient evacuation of apprentices

After the fire alarm was triggered, the apprentices were quickly evacuated by their supervisors. The fire department quickly arrived at the scene and freed injured people from the building, who were then handed over to Red Cross paramedics. Under the leadership of Red Cross operations manager Herbert Palfner, a medical aid center was set up in an adjacent dining room. The injured people were viewed there and assigned to their treatment places depending on the severity.

The leading emergency doctor, Peter Grasl, took over medical care and prepared the injured for transport. At the same time, the crisis intervention teams looked after the uninjured to ensure that everyone was well looked after.

Preparation and execution of the exercise

The planning and organization of this exercise was in the hands of district education officer Gerhard Fürpass, Silvia Meschnark and the “make-up artists” who ensured the realistic representation of the injuries. At the subsequent meeting, Fürpass thanked all participants, and especially the fire brigades, who worked actively under Commanders Thomas Schnepf and Hans Jürgen Ferlitsch. The exercise observers Bernd Wippel from the State Rescue Command and Lukas Amplatz expressed themselves positively about the effectiveness and strength of the Red Cross district.

Particularly worth mentioning was the support of the apprentice house staff under the direction of Johanna Lampl, who organized the exercise and the subsequent catering superbly. Such exercises are essential in order to be able to act quickly and well prepared in an emergency, and they help emergency services to continually improve their skills.
