Playing connects: Klagenfurt celebrates cross -generational fun!

On June 25, 2025, a cross-generational game afternoon took place in the St. Ruprecht community center, organized by the family office of the city of Klagenfurt. In cooperation with the Ebenthal Spielkreis and BKS Bank, a diverse program was offered that appealed not only children, but also their parents and grandparents. The opening took place by the family officer Constance Mochar, who emphasized the connecting power of playing. Spoiellassik as well as creative play stations and skill exercises were on the program and were enthusiastically accepted by the participants.

focus of the event was the cooperation and the common experience, less the competition. The aim was to strengthen the families, create meeting rooms and promote the social structure in the district. The game afternoon thus fits into a number of family-friendly events of the family office that aim to increase the quality of life for families in Klagenfurt. This type of event not only supports family coexistence, but is also part of a major discussion about the role of games in society.

The role of games in the community

such as bpb.de, over 80 percent of the over 16-year-old gamers play together. This underlines community formation through games. Players can both pursue common goals and compete with each other, which often creates topics of conversation, be it at school or on digital platforms. In particular, platforms such as Discord promote the formation and care of communities in which analog and digital acquaintances are maintained.

games have the potential to not only strengthen the sense of community, but also to shape social interactions. Nevertheless, digital spaces also pose risks, including verbal violence and problematic content, which is a challenge, especially for younger players. Parents are asked to accompany the media use of their children and to ensure adequate communication about possible dangers.

games as a means of intercultural education

Lift in an international context AWO.OR and the AWO emphasis the importance of games in non-formal education. Games promoted cooperation, solidarity and group dynamics. Especially with international encounters, “ICE Breaker” and other games help to establish the first contacts and reduce barriers. Games like the "stereotype" game sensitize young people for prejudice and invite you to discuss similarities and differences.

games not only promote social interaction within families and communities, but also the intercultural openness and learning about different cultures. You invite you to deal with others and to critically question your own attitudes.
