Summer time = track time: Vienna gets 11 km new tram lines!

The Viennese lines have announced extensive modernization work in the tram and subway network, which are carried out during the low-traffic summer time. The aim is to optimize the infrastructure for the future. Around 11 kilometers of new tracks and 45 switches are planned, which should benefit different lines. The focus is particularly on the work on the U4, the tunnel moderation of which continues under the Franz Josefs Kai during the summer vacation.

The U4 will drive divided during the construction activities during the holidays: from Hütteldorf to Schottenring and from Heiligenstadt to Friedensbrücke. Replacements were set up for the affected passengers; Line E4 and line D drive from Nußdorf to Schottenring. During this time, the intervals of the lines U6, 2, 30 and 31 are also condensed to maintain mobility.

Details on the construction work and diversions

The track inspections and renovations are comprehensive: around 1,800 meters of tracks and overhead lines have been renewed since April. Stops such as Johnstraße and Breitensee and work on Franz-Jonas-Platz will be completed by the end of June. On June 16, the track renewal on Jörgerstrasse, where 1,000 meters of tracks are to be renewed by the beginning of September.

During the construction work there is also diversions: line 43 runs over a changed route, and line 9 only runs between Westbahnhof and Rosensteingasse. In July and August, track work is also planned on the Carinthian Ring, University Ring and Schubertring, which results in redirection of lines D, 1 and 2. Tram line 71 will only drive between the Enkplatz and Kaiserebersdorf, whereby a replacement bus 71E between Karlsplatz and St. Marx is used during the construction work.

redesign of the lines

From July 7th, lines 6 and 18 at the margaret belt will be equipped with new tracks, whereby line 18 will be completely stopped by the end of August. Line 6 is diverted during this time. In addition, the track renewal for line 37 on the high wait will begin from July 28th, followed by a break until August 14th. For line 38, the intervals are planned, and there are various alternative options on lines D, 10A, 38A and 39A.

These modernization measures are part of a comprehensive network design. New tram lines 12 and 27 will be put into operation in autumn, and construction work to extend line 18 to the stadium started on June 2. The dense offer of bus, tram and subway lines as well as replacement offers during the construction work is intended to ensure that the Viennese population remains extensively mobile.

In order to promote the acceptance of maintenance work, the Viennese lines rely on humorous messages. Further detailed information on the planning is available at any time on the Wiener Linien website here .
