Hannover, Deutschland - basketball has a long and rich story that goes back to 3,000 years in North America. The first written mentions of similar games date to 1591. Sport, as we know it today, was launched in 1891 by James A. Nismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first women's basketball game took place on March 22, 1893 at Smith College. Since then, basketball has continued to develop.
After the Second World War, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1949, and in 1950 the league experienced a turning point when it was opened to African -American players. Chuck Cooper was the first player to be drafted into NBA, Nathaniel Clifton was the first with a contract, and Earl Lloyd was the first player to work on the field. Basketball quickly became an expression of many African Americans in urban communities.

The sport found its way into the Olympic Games in 1936 and the women joined the competition in 1976. Wheelchair basketball has a similar story because it has been Paralympic since 1960 and 1968.
