Scandal on the ORF foundation council: political disputes and high salaries!

Wien, Österreich - The ORF Foundation Council is currently at the center of a political scandal. As OE24 , the board of trustees only has 34 members today after a ÖVP politician was not approved as a party member. Peter Westenthaler, member of the Board of Trustees, criticizes the government parties sharply for the non -legal nomination of their representatives and describes the exclusion as "scandal". He sees this a clear violation of a constitutional judgment that demands the depoliticization of ORF.

As part of the session, the fees and the ARF savings program were also discussed. Westenthaler questioned the budget tax and asked the organization OBS to check their fee. He was able to report experiences with reminders and threats from debt collection agencies that have already bothered paying citizens.

responsibility and austerity measures

Westenthaler calls for an alternative financing of the ORF through the budget because it describes the current salary situation as a "wild growth of noise". In particular, the ORF tips earned every year, such as ex-green politicians Pius Strobl, are particularly criticized. In addition, 72 other top earners in ORF earn high salaries, which is not acceptable in times of savings constraints.

In the meeting, it was also discussed that despite the required savings, a conversion of the porter lodge is planned for an impressive eight million euros. Westenthaler wonders where the ORF actually wants to make savings, and he would like to prevent the audience from being asked again for the cash register, especially for events such as the song contest, which he calls "annual anti-Semite meeting".

government program and committee reform

orf.at The ORF-Foundation Council also deals with the current government program of the ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos. In this context, it was decided that the ORF contribution will not be valorized by 2029. ORF boss Roland Weißmann puts the company's necessary savings needs at around 220 million euros. Thomas Zach, head of the ÖVP-related "Freundeskreis", expressed that increasing efficiency in public relations was a tough task.

Furthermore, the discussion also spoke about the conversion of the entrance area to the ORF center, whereby Westenthaler described the planned investments as "not necessary". However, his application against the conversion plans was rejected by an overwhelming majority.

In a comprehensive committee reform, which could possibly result in a new constitution of the Board of Trustees, there is an intention to reduce the weighting of the political influence that the Constitutional Court criticized in its decision. Among other things, it is planned that the federal government will only send six people to the top ORF committee instead of nine in the future. In addition, the number of members of the public council on the board of trustees is to be increased from six to nine.

The orf has a board of trustees of 35 members, whose tasks include the order of the general director and the approval of budgets and invoice conclusions. The current period of function began on May 19, 2022 and has a term of four years.

The continuing discussions and the political pressure on the ORF show how important transparency and responsibility in this public media company are, especially in times of stricter austerity measures and the need for a reform of the committees.
