Revolution in recycling: Alpla brings the first PET system to Africa!
Ballito, Südafrika - In South Africa, the first “Bottle-to-Bottle” recycling system of the Vorarlberg company Alpla, led by Meyringer, will be put into operation in October 2022 at Durban. With a cost of 60 million euros, the system is groundbreaking for the recycling of PET bottles in Africa, which has an annual production capacity of 35,000 tons. Already 40 percent of the capacity are busy, which underlines the increasing demand for recycled PET (RPET). However, Meyringer expresses concerns about the feasibility of a deposit system in South Africa and refers to insufficient infrastructure and the potential negative effects on local plastic collectors as the main reasons for its skepticism. The bottles made of reprocessed PET are also 20 to 40 percent more expensive than new products.
In addition to this system, Alpla plans to build another recycling system in Ballito, which is north of Durban. From 2025, this is expected to recycle 60,000 tons of PET bottles annually, which will increase the annual production capacity of all Alpla recycling companies to a total of 238,000 tons for RPET. The construction for this project is planned for the summer of 2023, whereby the completion is to take place in autumn 2024. A 90,000 square meter area is used here, and the potential for labor is also remarkable: around 100 employees are employed in the new work, while a regional collection system could create over 10,000 indirect jobs Wirtschaftszeit reported.partnership with re-purep
In order to further strengthen the value chain for the recycling system, Alpla has announced a strategic partnership with a re-purple, a leading company for reverse logistics of plastic waste in Kwazulu-Natal. This cooperation aims to promote the recycling of PET bottles through innovative and sustainable solutions. Re-Purpose already operates four material recovery systems and promotes the collection of plastic waste in its surroundings by buyback centers Alpla blog .
A central goal of the partnership is to increase the collection of PET bottles to 5,000 tons per month in order to achieve the full capacity of the Alpla recycling system from 2026. These extensive measures for waste recycling are essential to improve access to more sustainable packaging options and benefit companies, consumers and the environment. Alpla is also active in apprenticeship training and employs 450 employees in his work in Lanseria near Johannesburg and about 200 other locations Kleine "> Zeitung .
