Speeding action on the A1: Police stop speeders over 200 km/h!

On Saturday, the Lower Austrian police became active again in the fight against speeding and caught several speeders. On the western motorway (A1), two drivers were measured driving at exorbitant speeds of over 200 km/h. This happened despite the maximum permitted speed of 130 km/h.

A 51-year-old Viennese man was stopped at Pyhra at 217 km/h, while a 35-year-old Serb living in Germany was caught at Böheimkirchen at 213 km/h. Both drivers had to temporarily give up their driving licenses and their vehicles were also confiscated. There is also a 23-year-old speeder from Vienna who is also reported and was caught driving at 128 km/h instead of the permitted 70 km/h on the L120 in St. Andrä-Wördern.

Overview of speeding crimes

All three drivers are now the focus of the responsible district authority, which will take appropriate measures against them. The incident is another example of the ongoing problem of speeding in Austria. According to official statistics on traffic violations, speeding violations are frequently recorded. In 2023, over 1.89 million speeding violations among men were documented in the FAER basic statistics.

In general, the data shows that speeding is the most common traffic offense. For women, this statistic is also at the top of the traffic violations with 547,088 violations. This number illustrates the need to take greater action against aggressive driving in order to ensure road safety.

Increase in road safety is ultimately measurable

A total of 10,119,560 people were still registered in the fitness to drive register (FAER) on January 1, 2025. The year before it was 10,239,129. This shows a slight decrease, which may be due to increased awareness and prevention measures.

In summary, the latest controls once again make it clear how important it is to maintain safety standards in road traffic. The police have announced that they will continue the checks in order to stop further speeders and thus contribute to general road safety. This will not only benefit road users but also society.
