Tasting resigns as Poland's trainer: Lewandowski's ultimatum works

The Polish national soccer team faces a major change: Michal Tasty has resigned as a coach. The step takes place after a public dispute with the striker Robert Lewandowski, who previously ruled out his return to the national team under a trial. "It is the best for the national team," said Tasty, explaining his resignation and emphasized that he had fulfilled a lifelong dream with the position of the national coach. Symptomatic for the current tensions is Lewandowski's deposition as a captain, which led to a massive loss of trust and finally to the cancellations.

The argument was poured when Lewandowski, who played a total of 158 caps and scored 85 goals, accused the coach of abusing his trust. The striker also announced that he would hire his work in the national team as long as Tasty heads the business. This decision caused direct reactions, not least by the Polish Football Association PZPN, who thanked Tasty for his commitment.

Captain change and World Cup ambitions

Lewandowski, 36 years old and currently under contract with FC Barcelona, decided after a long season not to use the current qualification window. In his message on platform X (formerly Twitter), he expressed the desire to be able to play again for the national team as soon as it was clear who would be responsible for the team. Public statements have grown by Lewandowski's pressure on Tasty, since he clearly questioned his confidence in the trainer.

The return to a stable situation, meanwhile, seems to be a further distance, since Poland recently lost a World Cup qualification game against Finland 1: 2 and fell to third place in his group. Tasty had already announced that Piotr Zielinski should wear the captain's armband in the future. This decision about the team leadership was informed of Lewandowski in advance, which obviously reinforced its displeasure.

The situation is complex. Lewandowski himself has great ambitions and strives to lead the Polish team to the USA, Mexico and Canada for the 2026 World Cup. But the way there could be rocky as long as the internal conflicts are not solved. The resignation trials could mark the first step into a new era of Polish football.
