Poland chooses Nawrocki: Tusk threatens political blockade!

Polen - On June 10, 2025, Poland faces a political upheaval. The presidential election on June 1 brought the independent historian Karol Nawrocki to power, who narrowly won against the liberal Rafal Trzaskowski. This output is not only a defeat for Trzaskowski, but also to the previous head of government Donald Tusk, who has headed a center-left coalition of three parties since the end of 2023. Nawrocki, known as a legalist, already announced that it vehemently combat the pro -European government coalition.

Nawrocki's votes were a clear announcement in a political climate that is increasingly shaped by tensions. The elections and the successful establishment of supporters under the leadership of PIS boss Jaroslaw Kaczynski brought Nawrocki into a position in which he can have significant influence on the upcoming legislative period. His taking office is planned for August 6, 2025 and is expected with great excitement.

conflicts and resistance

The prospects for a harmonious cooperation between Tusk and Nawrocki seem cloudy. Nawrocki has openly announced resistance to the reforms sought by Tusk, which aim to remedy the damage that the previous PIS government has caused between 2015 and 2023 on the rule of law. Essential draft laws proposed by Tusk's government have been repeatedly blocked by Tusk’s predecessor, President Andrzej Duda. It is therefore likely that Nawrocki will continue this course and that Tusk's projects could consider considerably.

The upcoming question of trust in parliament on June 11 could increase immediate pressure on Tusk's coalition. Tusk is not only faced with the challenge of defending his course in internal politics, but also has to assert himself against Nawrocki's allegations that “have had him as the“ worst head of government that Poland has had since 1989 ”. Nawrocki even demands the exchange of Tusk if his coalition should continue to exist.

European consequences and international reactions

The choice of Nawrocki is considered directional for Poland and Europe. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expresses concern about the possible consequences of his victory and calls for cooperation to ensure peace and prosperity in Europe. Hungary's head of government Viktor Orban, on the other hand, congratulated Nawrocki and called the victory "fantastic". This political change could lead to Nawrocki blocking pro-European initiatives, which would be another sign of the growing influence of right-wing nationalist forces in the EU

Nawrocki signaled early on that he would also take his veto against any NATO membership of Ukraine, which could encourage other international diplomatic tensions. In this way, the Europe of the political center is under pressure from right -wing populists and autocratic leaders. The entire political landscape is on the brink and will make it difficult for both Tusk and Nawrocki to form stable alliances in political space.
