Philip Wohlgemuth: SPÖ Tirol starts with fresh wind and 95.93%!

Innsbruck, Österreich - On June 28, 2025, Philip Wohlgemuth was elected as the new state party chairman of the Tyrolean SPÖ with an overwhelming 95.93 % of the votes. The ordinary state party conference took place at the Innsbruck trade fair and attracted around 360 delegates and sympathizers. In his opening speech, Wohlgemuth spoke of the need to re -host the SPÖ and prepared the members for the upcoming state election 2027.

In his speech, Wohlgemuth emphasized the will of the SPÖ to free himself from the role of the junior partner in the coalition with the Landes-ÖVP. He said that an opening of the party was necessary to include new members, including non-party members. The new chairman called central issues such as living, social affairs and mobility that are of great importance for social democracy in Tyrol.

Wohlgemuth's vision for the SPÖ

Wohlgemuth announced that the SPÖ would make the SPÖ a “home base for progress” and emphasized the importance of teamwork and collectivity. It was particularly important to him to call for a social soil and housing policy, which should also include the introduction of an intensified vacancy tax. He also called for a preventive social policy and a balanced concept in migration policy.

In this context, SPÖ Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler clarified in his greeting that not only the increase in the age of retirement is to be rejected, but also the introduction of security is urgently needed. In doing so, he cried the tense budget situations and the past government without explicitly calling the ÖVP.

Surprising elections and the resignation of Georg Dornauer

The party congress also marked the end of Georg Dornauer's era, who stepped down after an internal party and from then on functions as a simple member of the state parliament. Wohlgemuth received congratulations from both Babler and Tirol's Governor Anton Mattle from the ÖVP.

In addition, the “Viktor-Adler Plaque” were awarded to prominent members of the Tyrolean SPÖ during the party meeting, including Hannes Gschwentner and Gisela Wurm. Wohlgemuth, who succeeds Pamela Rendi-Wagner, sees the SPÖ as a lot of challenges, especially with regard to voter binding and internal structures.

In view of the nationwide developments, such as a notorious election result for Middle Parties, the discussion about social justice is also important for the Tyrolean SPÖ. Recent studies show that social justice and equal opportunities are crucial for many voters, which Wohlemuth wants to take up in his efforts for political renewal. According to a report by the progressive center, 75 % of the Germans believe that the parents' house too often decides on life chances, and 66 % find it hardly possible to build up assets on their own.

Wohlgemuth seems determined to accept these challenges and to position the SPÖ as a strong voice for social issues. Last but not least, the success of his project will depend on the ability to reform the internal structures and to lead a dialogue with voters that goes beyond traditional party borders.

How to proceed remains to be seen, but the Tyrolean SPÖ now seems to be on a new course. In order to gain further insights into the political challenges, a look at developments in the field of social justice is recommended, which also gain relevance at a federal political level.
