ÖVP meeting in the Chancellery: Who will be Nehammer's successor?

Austria is in a state of political paralysis! After the abrupt resignation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer, which was announced after the failure of coalition negotiations with the SPÖ and the Neos, there are signs of change. The leadership of the conservative ÖVP will meet on Sunday in the Federal Chancellery to discuss Nehammer's successor. He announced that he would strive for an orderly transition, but at least one decision on his successor could still be pending, as the crown reported.

Nehammer tried to form a coalition with his party to prevent the right-wing populist FPÖ, which dominated the last elections, from coming to power. However, the Neos put their contracts on hold and talks about a center government failed miserably due to different ideas about how to combat the stagnating economy and the budget crisis. There has been little progress since negotiations began in November, increasing pressure on conservative forces, such as ZDF highlights. The political landscape could now change drastically as some in the ÖVP consider a shift towards cooperation with the FPÖ.

Who will take the lead?

In the ÖVP there is intensive discussion about the successor. Vorldy, politicians such as ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, despite ongoing corruption investigations, and the largely unknown Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer have dominated the conversation as potential successors. In addition, EU Minister Karoline Edtstadler is also considered a possible candidate, although she previously wanted to withdraw from top politics. However, who will ultimately take over the leadership remains uncertain, while a new election is also on the horizon, which, according to a survey, could give the FPÖ a further boost.
