New health taxi in Korneuburg: support for people with walking difficulties!
In the Korneuburg district there is now a new offer for patients who need help with transport. The so-called health taxi is provided by the Red Cross of Lower Austria and is specifically intended for people who are unable to use public transport due to their health. This service is used when a doctor issues a medical transport order.
“We have introduced our health taxi since September to close a gap where taxi coverage for medical trips is insufficient,” explains Markus Mottl, who leads the project. Thanks to a new regulation that has been in force since January 1, 2024, the costs for these trips will be covered by health insurance companies. The aim is to offer a sensible addition to existing transport services, not to compete.
Requirements and operating procedures
To use the health taxi, some requirements must be met. A patient is considered unable to walk if they cannot use public transport due to their health condition, which must be proven by a medical certificate. These transports are intended exclusively for patients who do not require medical support.
The service is available Monday to Saturday between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. and is operated by trained staff who specifically address the needs of these patients. Trips can be arranged by the patients themselves or by referrers such as doctors or hospitals. It is possible to transport patients to various facilities, including hospitals or rehabilitation centers. These trips are billed directly to the health insurance companies, based on corresponding contracts.
Four of the five planned locations for the health taxi are currently in operation, with Korneuburg, Guntramsdorf, Wieselburg and Zwettl being the first stops. In the first few weeks of the service, 100 trips were successfully completed. Mottl is optimistic that this initiative will not only improve the quality of medical care, but also contribute to the satisfaction of those insured.
If you have any questions or would like to register a trip, the health taxi is available on 059 144 84 84 or by email at gesundheit@n.roteskreuz.at.
