Tutoring costs are exploding: parents now pay 800 euros a year!

Tutoring costs have reached a new high in the 2025 school year. Loud crown Parents pay an average of 800 euros for tutoring, which represents a significant increase compared to 360 euros in 2021. The continually increasing expenses are putting a strain on many families and are showing worrying developments in the education system.

Today, 31% of children and young people need tutoring, although only 18% can actually rely on paid services. Worryingly, around 45,000 students need support but cannot afford it. The demand for tutoring is particularly pronounced in AHS upper grades, where almost half of the students seek support. At primary schools, however, this proportion is only 22%.

Development of tutoring costs

15 years ago, the proportion of students who needed tutoring was only 20%. The figures currently show that 10% of students even take advantage of tutoring during the summer holidays, which costs an additional 450 euros on average. The need for tutoring becomes even clearer as a third of parents state that the subject matter was not sufficiently understood.

Two-thirds of the tutoring sessions are in mathematics, which highlights the challenges in this subject area. Compared to the previous year, the average expenses for tutoring have increased by 50 euros. At the same time, 75% of parents feel under time pressure and 79% of students need help from their parents occasionally, 25% even daily.

Tutoring as market development

The demand for tutoring is caught between inadequate school support structures and a prosperous private tutoring market. According to a study by the Hans Böckler Foundation tutoring has developed into a parallel system. The study examines both historical and current developments in the privately organized tutoring market.

The study shows that tutoring arose from originally time-limited learning support to compensate for school deficits. Today there is a market with significant turnover, which shows social selectivity and is directly related to the school system.

Demands for school reforms

In view of these developments, experts are calling for investments in all-day school programs and more resources for schools to purchase materials. A reform of mathematics teaching is also being discussed in order to better meet the needs of students.

The challenges in the area of tutoring not only represent a financial burden for families, but also raise questions about the structures of the education system. The market for tutoring will continue to grow in the future, as will spending, according to Statista have increased continuously over the years.
