Murder of US health insurance boss: Suspect arrested!
A brutal murder shakes New York: Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, is suspected of shooting the CEO of health insurer UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Thompson was on his way to an investor conference when he was attacked from behind. Shell casings were found during the crime that clearly matched a weapon discovered at Mangione's, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told ABC News. Fingerprints recovered from the crime scene also belong to Mangione. The case has already sparked a wave of outrage against the health care industry, with many online celebrating the killing, which Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called despicable. He emphasized: “We will hold people accountable,” and announced possible additional charges due to background motives that are still being investigated.
The arrest and evidence of a planned crime
After several days on the run, Mangione was finally caught in Altoona, Pennsylvania. When he was arrested, he had a notebook with him in which he planned the crime and described methods to kill Thompson "causefully and precisely," the New York Times reported. Mangione, who comes from a wealthy family and was last registered in Honolulu, challenged his extradition to New York after his arrest, which could delay the legal process. The prosecutor has already announced a separate lawsuit over the possession of additional weapons, while the defense insists that there is no evidence of Mangione's guilt.
The shots that fatally wounded Thompson were also fired by a “ghost gun,” an essentially untraceable weapon made from easily obtainable materials. This increases concerns about such dangerous weapons, which are becoming increasingly widespread. With a possible sentence of up to 25 years to life for second-degree murder, Mangione could soon face intense legal battles. Developments in the case remain in focus due to the serious allegations and societal reaction, while Bragg indicates that the prosecution is ready to move the proceedings forward.
