Klagenfurt: Music and compassion unites to the World Refugee Day!

On June 20, 2025, the World Refugee Day, an important event will take place at the Alten Platz in Klagenfurt under the motto #wearfamily . The aim of this meeting is to draw attention to the right to family, asylum and a worthy cooperation. The participants actively campaign for a humane asylum policy and demand an end to the restrictions on family reunification. The event begins at 5 p.m.

The event is supplemented by a diverse program that includes music, performances, statements and creative actions. The event is musically designed by the ensemble of sounding variety in Carinthia of the GMPU. Barbara Ambrusch-Rapp will present a performance, while the Kopp23 group shows an artistic performance. Ghazal Abrahim participates with a live painting, and Bettina Pirker from SOS Balkan route invites you to a symbolic auction.

statements and moderation

statements from various organizations and people such as Vanessa Milic (platform migration), Caritas, Diakonie as well as Hans-Peter Premur and Manfred Sauer from the churches will also be part of the event. Martin Diendorfer from Carinthia Andas takes over the moderation. There will also be an open mic that all guests have the opportunity to raise their voice and share their thoughts.

The reason for such events can be seen in a broader context of migration. Refugees differ from other international migrants in their forced migration, which is often caused by conflicts or persecution. According to information from the Federal Center for Political Education, states must distinguish states between refugees in need of protection and ordinary migrants, whereby not every involuntary hike, such as poverty or natural disasters, is recognized as relevant to protection. International refugee law, which arose in response to the world wars of the 20th century, stipulates that states have the right to decide on their territorial access and protection, but is limited by binding international standards. The Geneva Convention of Refugee, which was created in the 1950s, defines refugees as persons who are pursued for reasons of breed, religion, nationality, social group or political conviction. This convention and its supplementary protocol from 1967 offer a framework that approves of 140 states, including Germany and EU member states, and regulates access to asylum procedures as well as the non-refoulement principle (ban on rejection to a persecution area).

climate and environmental issues

Last but not least,

Climate and climate -division also plays an increasingly important role in discourse on migration and asylum rights. People are driven out due to environmental changes and natural disasters, but their status remains largely unregulated because the Geneva Refugee Convention is not applicable to them. The 'Protection Agenda' of the Nansen initiative and the initiative supported by Germany to support environmentally related migrants aim to offer these people better.

Overall, the event on World Refugee Day in Klagenfurt will not only set a sign of humanity, but will also draw attention to the challenges and rights of refugees who are of central importance in a time of global crises and changes.
