Two cars collide head-on on Gailtal Straße - driver seriously injured

On Thursday morning around 10:30 a.m. a serious traffic accident occurred on Gailtal Straße (B 111) in the municipality of St. Stefan im Gailtal. Two cars, driven by a 62-year-old man from the Villach-Land district and a 60-year-old man from Villach, collided head-on in oncoming traffic. The exact cause of the accident is still unclear, but is being investigated by the police.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries in the collision and had to be taken to the LKH Villach after immediate emergency medical treatment. Witnesses who witnessed the incident said the older driver likely veered too far to the left, leading him into oncoming traffic. There was significant damage to both vehicles.

Rescue workers and fire brigade on duty

The accident investigation required the deployment of several volunteer fire departments from the region, including the fire departments of St. Stefan/Gail, Förolach, Görtschach, Hermagor, Köstendorf, Nötsch im Gailtal and Vorderberg. A total of around 65 firefighters worked at the scene to manage the situation and redirect traffic. While the accident was being investigated, all traffic between Köstendorf and St. Stefan was diverted, which led to delays in the area.

The incident is another example of the dangers on the road that can be caused by driver errors and careless driving. The police have started an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. Further details about the incident are still sparse, but police are expected to release more information in the coming days.
