Serious industrial accident in the Tauernschleuse tunnel – two injured
On November 26, 2024 at 2:45 p.m., a serious industrial accident occurred in the tunnel of the Tauernschleuse Mallnitz-Böckstein, specifically on platform 1 in the direction of Böckstein. The incident occurred at a construction site at kilometer 36.8 when a rail-mounted work platform that was reversing collided with another rail-mounted work machine. The worker, a 30-year-old man from Styria, did not notice the machine behind him when he reset the raised work platform.
Two workers from Croatia, aged 36 and 37, were seriously injured in this collision. The emergency response on site included first aid, followed by rescuing the injured from the tunnel. The two men were then flown with the C11 and RK1 rescue helicopters to the Klagenfurt Clinic and the Villach LKH. The condition of the injured was not specified, but the severity of the injuries indicates a serious threat to their health.
Police actions and investigations
The police and the labor inspectorate conducted a comprehensive investigation into the accident, which led to the closure of the construction site for several hours. Such investigations are crucial to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident and identify possible safety deficiencies that could lead to such accidents. The exact background is expected in the coming days while the authorities process what happened and analyze the causes.
This accident is a reminder of the importance of safety precautions on construction sites, especially when operating heavy machinery. Responsible persons must ensure that all workers are able to recognize and avoid hazards. The events in Mallnitz-Böckstein illustrate the risks in the construction industry and the need for constant training and safety checks.
