Major fire in Fohnsdorf: Fire brigade saves barn from flames!

On May 26, 2025, at around 7:00 p.m. there was a fire in a barn in Hetzendorf, municipality of Fohnsdorf, Styria. The Hetzendorf, Fohnsdorf, Rattenberg, Judenburg-Stadt and Zeltweg-Stadt fire departments were alerted, and a total of 66 emergency services were deployed to fight the fire. The source of the fire was in hay bales stored in the barn, while the cause remained unknown for now. Fortunately, a major fire was prevented by acting quickly, report colleagues from Fireworld.

The first measures were initiated by a farmer who transported the affected hay bales to an adjacent meadow with a farm loader. The fire brigade's intervention was crucial as they extinguished the hay bales using heavy respiratory protection and simultaneously processed the remaining bales in the barn. In addition to the fire department, the police and the Red Cross were also deployed to support the situation.

Fire protection in agriculture

Safety when storing hay and straw is a central issue in agriculture. These materials are highly flammable and therefore require special precautions. Loud Fire protection headquarters Fire-hazardous work near straw and hay should be avoided. Safety distances are essential and should be observed as follows:

  • 25 m zu Stromleitungen, Bahngleisen, öffentlichen Plätzen und Gebäuden
  • 50 m zu brennbaren Wänden (z. B. Holz)
  • 50 m zu weichen Bedachungen (z. B. Reetdächer)
  • 50 m zu Wäldern und Mooren
  • 100 m zu anderen Stroh- und Heulagerflächen

In addition, the premises must be checked for the condition of the electrical equipment before storage in order to minimize the risk of spontaneous combustion. Hay and straw should always be stored in a dry state to prevent fires. A measurement protocol to document the temperature progression is required, as temperatures above 35°C in particular can increase the risk of self-ignition.

The good cooperation between the fire brigade and the timely measures taken by the farmer illustrate the importance of comprehensive fire protection in agriculture. Preventive safety measures and quick action are crucial to avoid such incidents and ensure safety on farms.
