A stunning report shows that over 1.94 million people, or 22% of Austria's total population, live in housing provided or managed by non-profit building associations (GBVs). Loud APA OTS 1,342,000 people live in GBV rental housing, while 601,000 live in housing managed by these organizations. The 182 GBVs, which operate as companies, are responsible for providing housing for a wide range of the population without maximizing profits.

Financial overview of the GBVs

The balance sheet totals of all GBVs reach GBV-Current a total value of 62.4 billion euros as of the last balance sheet date, most of which is dated December 31, 2022. This sum represents an increase of 2.5 billion euros or 4.1% compared to the previous year. The share of GBVs in the form of a cooperative is 28.1 billion euros, while those in the form of a corporation account for 34.3 billion euros. The GBVs currently manage around 998,000 apartments, of which around 660,000 are own rental and cooperative apartments.

This encouraging development is evidence of the stability and influence of non-profit building associations in Austria, which are regulated under the Housing Nonprofit Act (WGG) and supplementary regulations. The community-oriented approach of these organizations ensures that housing remains accessible to all and social justice is promoted.
