Woman (81) in Traun: sign of life after dramatic rescue operation!

On August 13, 2025, an 81-year-old woman was discovered lifeless in the water of the Traun near Gmunden at 3:30 p.m. The discovery took place by a 55-year-old from the Gmunden district, who immediately alerted the emergency call and won other bathers to support. A 56-year-old man from the same district jumped into the water to help. In addition, two stand-up paddlers, a 26-year-old from Vöcklabruck and a 25-year-old from Wels-Land, supported the rescue operation.

A 36-year-old nurse from the Gmunden district immediately took the initiative and started reviving the woman. Thanks to her quick reactions, the 81-year-old showed signs of life a short time later and was then brought to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Gmunden, where further medical measures were taken. This successful revival illustrates the importance of fast action in emergency situations.

fatal incident on the Traunstein

A few days earlier, on August 8, 2025, a tragic incident occurred on the Traunstein. A 74-year-old hiker, possibly Leopold Windtner, former President of the Austrian Football Association and General Director of Energie AG Oberösterreich, collapsed with a group during a hike. At 7:50 a.m., a 52-year-old participant from Linz alerted the emergency call after the hiker had passed out.

The immediately initiated cardiac massage and the support from passing mountain athletes could not prevent the hiker from passing through a emergency helicopter after a landing resuscitation. These incidents illustrate the major challenges associated with cardiovascular queues.

resuscitation statistics and need for further training

The need to improve the resuscitation rate is underpinned by the current figures from the German resuscitation register 2023. In Germany, around 55,000 patients were reanimated according to a cardiovascular arrest, with 51 percent of the resuscitation being initiated by first aid. The number of successfully reanimated people and gender distribution show that two thirds of the resuscitation cases were affected by men.

  • Over 74 percent of the patients were reached within eight minutes of alarm.
  • 30 percent of those affected had no or only slight previous illnesses.
  • The 30-day survival rate is 10.4 percent.

The German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) therefore demands more intensive training and educational measures to increase the resuscitation rate and thus improve the survival rates. The campaigns aim to enable more people to act correctly in emergencies and show how important quick help is.

The tragic incidents in Gmunden are not only isolated cases, but part of a major problem that can be positively influenced by timely and competent first aid.
