E-scooter sinner in sight: Police relies on drastic controls!

The Viennese police took measures against e-scooter and e-scooter drivers as well as other traffic offenders as part of the “Vienna rolls safely” campaign from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning. This initiative aims to increase traffic safety in the capital, especially with regard to the increased use of e-scooters since its introduction in 2018. In the first phase of the campaign, around 450 advertisements for traffic law violations were recorded, including 225 due to speed overruns.

like In 2024 there were two dead in Vienna and almost 400 injuries by e-scooter accidents. The number of impairments caused by alcohol and drugs exceeded 1,000, which led to a more than triple increase in violations under the influence of intoxicants. This development prompted the authorities to proceed increasingly against "pimped" e-scooters, as they can significantly increase the risk of accidents. The campaign is supported by information materials such as flyers and posters, which contain the QR codes for further content.

prevention measures and clarification

The campaign comprises three essential columns: the targeted clarification of users, increased controls and comprehensive information for all road users. In March alone, over 300 ads and around 100 organ mandates were issued in March alone. Special measures are directed against severely impaired drivers, whereby the possible penalty heights can be between 800 and 5,900 euros, and the driver's license can be withdrawn if there is no traffic.

The most common violations include driving on walking stands, taking several people with you and disregarding light signals. For children under the age of 12, a helmet is required when driving e-scooters. According to
KFV , the accidents with e-scooters rose by a further 25 percent in 2024, which illustrates the urgency of the measures.
