Last Friday, a serious traffic accident occurred at the Margaret belt in Vienna, in which a 39-year-old e-scooter driver was seriously injured. The incident occurred during an operational drive of a police radio patrol. The rescue helicopter Christophorus 9 was quickly on site and transported the injured driver to the hospital. Fortunately, however, there is no danger of life for him, although he had to be treated with laceration on the head and a pneumothorax (lung collapse). In 2023, over 1,700 traffic accidents were registered with e-scooters in Austria, which injured 1,607 and led to 3 deaths.

recommendations for more security

In order to increase safety in road traffic, the ÖAMTC gives the following recommendations for e-scooter drivers: practice in protected areas, wear a helmet and do not drive to several on one scooter. In addition, alcoholic journeys should be avoided, and in the dark season it is of great importance to wear light clothing and reflectors.

e-scooter are legally equivalent to bicycles, which means that the minimum age for use is 12 years or 9 or 10 years accompanied by cycling. The alcohol limit for e-scooter drivers is 0.8 per thousand, but the ÖAMTC recommends a value of 0.0 per thousand.

The latest events and the associated statistics illustrate that awareness of the dangers of e-scooters urgently need to be increased in order to improve traffic safety. The tragic consequences of accidents can be significantly reduced by responsible behavior and corresponding precautions.
