cyclists in road traffic
The accident statistics show that such collisions are increasingly occurring. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024. This represents a decline in 33 deaths compared to 2023, but this is an increase in a ten -year comparison. Cyclists represent every sixth lifter in road traffic. It is particularly alarming that 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents with personal damage were collisions with cars. In 75.3 percent of the cases, drivers wore the main debt on these accidents, according to the Tagesschau.
special risk to older cyclists
Another concern of concern is the high number of e-bike denial among older people. In 2024, 43.5 percent of the fatally crashed cyclists were traveling with e-bikes. This number is almost five times higher than ten years ago. More than two thirds of the fatally injured cyclists were 65 years or older. The proportion of victims in e-bikes is 68.8 percent, while it is 59.4 percent in bicycles without electrical drive (https://www.desatis.de/de/Pressemage departments/2024/pd24_n014_46241.html).
The numbers illustrate a worrying development. In 2023, an average of 7.9 drivers were killed in 1,000 pedelec accidents. This is a significant acceptance compared to the 17.4 deaths per 1,000 accidents in 2014. While the total number of accidents with pedelecs increase from 2,200 in 2014 to 23,900 in 2023, the number of accidents with non -Motorized bicycles decreased in the same period from 76,600 to 72,200. This shows the increasing popularity of e-bikes, which, however, also have new risks.
