Drone attack on Kharkiw: Two dead and over 50 injuries!
Charkiw, Ukraine - in Charkiw, Ukraine, a devastating Russian drone attack occurred today, in which at least two people were killed and over 50 more, including eight children. Regional governor Oleh Synjehubow confirmed that the attacks met several houses, playgrounds and shops in the city. A total of 17 drones were used, of which nine injured people, including a two-year-old girl and a 15-year-old, had to be hospitalized. The Ukrainian military reported that 40 started out of 85 drones could be shot down. These attacks are part of an increasing intensity of the Russian offensive, which also includes attack goals in the Donetsk and Odessa regions. The location is further tightened by previous massive air raids in the days before. Vol.at reports that the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj also demands new sanctions against Russia.
The European Community reacts to the escalating situation with considerations of new sanctions, especially to the oil sector in Russia. A proposal by the EU Commission wants to halve the price limit for Russian oil from currently 60 to $ 30 per barrel. This is intended to help reduce Russia's income from oil export. However, there is resistance from Slovakia against the 18th sanction package, which also affects imports of gas, oil and nuclear fuel.
Current military developments
In addition to the events in Charkiw, Russian troops reached the west of the Ukrainian region of Donetsk, while the offensive in Dnipropetrovsk continues. In this context, the Kremlin plans to set up a buffer zone. Dnipropetrowsk is one of the five Ukrainian areas whose international law has been with Russia, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Saporischschja, Cherson and the Crimea. These military developments cross the limits of the regional conflict and show the continuing intensity of the arguments in the whole of Ukraine. MDR reports that Ukraine also uses the latest military techniques, including progress in urban engineering. The role of drones has proven to be crucial during the conflict. According to ZDF , Ukraine plays a leading role in military drone technology, with a high shooting rate of over 90% in Russian Shahed drones. Innovations in the Ukrainian drone strategy include the use of FPV drones that can be shot down using special shotguns. These technologies are not only essential for the current military operations, but could also help alleviate the Ukraine recruitment problem by offering soldiers more useful possible uses.
Overall, the situation in Ukraine remains tense. The upcoming G7 summit from June 15th to 17th in Canada will offer the opportunity to discuss joint measures to coping with the crisis. Meanwhile, the US Senate is preparing a new sanction package against Russia, while the international community looks at a possible escalation of the conflict.
