Coco Gauff triumphs in Paris: first French Open victory for the tennis hope!

Coco Gauff celebrated a historic triumph on June 7, 2025 in Paris by winning the French Open for the first time. In the final, the 21-year-old beat top seed Aryna Sabalenka 6:7(5), 6:2, 6:4 and thus secured her second Grand Slam title after the US Open 2023, which she also won against Sabalenka. With this achievement, Gauff is the first US woman to triumph on the Seine since Serena Williams in 2015.

The highly dramatic match was characterized by intense rallies and difficult weather conditions, with strong winds challenging the players. In the first set, Sabalenka was able to use an early advantage and quickly led 4:1, but missed two set points at 5:4. Gauff, who had a 4-1 lead in the first set tiebreak, eventually had to give up the set 6-7(5), which was particularly painful after 77 minutes of play.

The rise to the championship

In the second set, however, Gauff was significantly stronger and played superiorly, which was reflected in her 63% success on first serves and 67% on second serves. With breaks to 1:0 and 4:1 she dominated the set and won 6:2. In the decisive third set, the outcome was uncertain for a long time. Gauff initially led 3:1, but Sabalenka countered and equalized to 3:4.

After Gauff served for the match at 5:4, she was able to secure her second match point after 2:38 hours of play and successfully converted it. For this she received prize money of 2.55 million euros. Despite the win, Gauff remains in second place in the WTA rankings behind Belarusian Sabalenka, with Sabalenka having 10,683 points and Gauff 6,863 points before the match.

The French Open 2025 was part of the renowned Grand Slam tournaments, which are considered to be the most highly endowed in tennis. The term "Grand Slam" refers to winning all four major tournaments - Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open - within a calendar year. These tournaments not only attract millions of viewers, but also offer big prize money and prestigious ranking points, which is why the competition among the best players is so intense. Gauff is part of an elite group as she has now won two Grand Slam titles.

Top players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will meet in the men's final of the French Open, further increasing the excitement and interest in these prestigious tournaments. The Grand Slam events see growing viewer interest each year, attracting over 3.36 million fans in 2024.

Gauff's victory marks a significant time for US tennis, and her success inspires many young players worldwide. The triumph in Paris will go down in the history books not only as a personal achievement, but also as a moment that symbolizes the return of U.S. tennis to the top of the international game.
