Crane spectacle on Lake Neusiedler: 17,000 birds in dusk

The nature lovers on Lake Neusiedler can currently look forward to a fascinating spectacle. In the early morning hours, thousands of cranes land on the east bank and start their onward journey from there. Of the approximately 17,000 cranes that were spotted last week, around 3,400 birds are currently on site. According to Harald Grabenhofer from the Neusiedler See Seewinkel National Park, the birds show excellent conditions at their rest areas this year.

The cranes use the Seewinkel as a stopover on their journey, which for many of them begins in the Baltic States. Here the birds meet before they continue to the east, more precisely to the Hortobágy Puszta in Hungary. At this location, up to 195,000 cranes are counted, which makes Seewinkel a central point on the west and east travel route of these impressive birds.

resting conditions and nature conservation

The current resting conditions for the cranes are exceptionally good due to the mild weather and rich food in the varnishes. These finders not only enjoy the best food sources, but also enjoy a protected room to relax before they continue their long journey. This phase is crucial for the cranes because you can recover from the hardships of the flight and recharge your batteries.

The observation of these majestic birds attracts many spectators who want to experience the natural spectacle and the beauty of nature. The persistent counts and observations in the national park are part of the efforts to strengthen awareness of nature conservation and to underline the importance of such habitats. These landscapes are not only important for the cranes, but also for many other bird species that stop on their travel path.

Such nature observations also offer a wonderful opportunity for photographers and ornithological interested parties to see the impressive birds in their natural habitat and to gain new knowledge about their migration and way of life. The region around Lake Neusiedler plays a key role in protecting nature and promoting biodiversity.
