Border protection in Burgenland: Additional soldiers to combat increasing numbers of migrants!

In Burgenland, the security situation on the border with the neighboring Hungarian region is becoming significantly tighter. According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, around 4,500 illegal migrants have been apprehended so far this year - a dramatic reduction compared to the almost 30,000 cases last year and over 80,000 in 2022. At a celebratory meeting for the soldiers and police officers involved in border protection, Karner emphasized that the measures taken were on the right track to further reduce the numbers. However, the Bundeswehr's notorious assistance mission to support the police is now being increased because there have recently been more apprehensions at the border, as the Interior Minister confirmed at a press conference.

Expansion of assistance deployment

In order to meet the newly increased challenges, the government is planning to send up to 400 additional soldiers to the border. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner announced that the first reinforcements will be moving out of the Khevenhüller barracks in Klagenfurt next weekend. Around 600 soldiers are currently deployed. The additional 400 reinforcements will increase the total number to around 1,400 soldiers on the Austrian borders, which also includes a reorganization of the assistance mission in order to be able to react more flexibly to the situation.

The Interior Minister had also criticized EU practices, which in his opinion revealed serious security problems at the Union's external borders, which was reflected in the increasing number of apprehensions in Austria. In the associated situation center in Burgenland, strategies are to be developed to better identify those crossing the border illegally and to deter them from smuggling activities. In view of these developments, the first criticisms against the security policy emerged. The SPÖ in particular pointed out the ÖVP's failure to combat irregular migration.
