Run for a good cause: Raffael collects 1649 euros for cancer aid

Raffael Skalnik from Eisenstadt lost his mother to cancer in April 2024. In order to process this profound loss, the young man decided to become active and started running. As part of the Vienna Marathon 2024, he assumed the challenge of collecting money for Cancer Aid Burgenland. His goal was to reach 1422 euros - a number that symbolizes the 42.2 kilometers of a marathon. The fundraising campaign, which he started under the title "Run for Those who can’t - my marathon for the cancer aid", was both an act of commemoration and a personal project for him. On April 6, 2024, his mother's first day of death, he finally ran the marathon.

"Not my will, My Heart Will Be Done" was his mantra, which accompanied him during the run. The emotional burden was particularly noticeable on the 35th kilometer when Raffael had to deal with physical difficulties and wondered if he should go on. Ultimately, he decided to end the route in order to use the potential he had - in contrast to the cancer patients to whom he wanted to pay tribute. He exceeded his donation goal and collected a total of 1649 euros, which he handed over to the Cancer Aid Burgenland. For him it was a kind of farewell to his mother and a form of emotional liberation that gave him courage to tackle new challenges.

donation actions in the event of mourning

Raffael's inspiring action is an example of a new way of commemoration that is made possible in mourning aid. According to the Deutsche Krebshilfe , descendants can start donations after the loss of a relative. The development of such an action includes several steps: First, the title and a short description must be determined. Uploading an image or photos of the deceased is also possible. Donors can then be informed about the campaign via social networks and other channels. It should be noted that a thank -you message is required for the supporters to show appreciation and promote trust.

It is an important task to educate relatives of cancer patients about the disease and its consequences. The question often arises as to how and when this should happen. According to the Krebshilfe , children should be informed step by step and accompanying discussions about the health of a parent. Open and honest communication is crucial to build trust. It is important to take your own feelings into account as parents before talking to the children to avoid unnecessary pressure and specifically respond to your needs.

Raffael plans to run in the future, and would like to not only commemorate his late mother, but also to draw attention to the cancer problem. His commitment and the associated fundraiser could inspire others to also become active and find a way in mourning to get involved and help.
