Bruckner-Uni mourns the core-a musician leaves inheritance
Linz, Österreich - On July 12, 2025, the music world was reached by sad news: the founding rector of the Linz Bruckner University, from Gutzeit, died. Born in Berlin in 1947, he leaves a large legacy in the field of music training in Austria. His career led him through the Musikhochschule Cologne and the Universities of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Freiburg to significant positions in music education.
In 1995 he took over the management of the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. His outstanding work was recognized in 2004 when he habilitated as part of the accreditation of the Bruckner Conservatory to the private university as a university professor of music education and music mediation. In the same year he became rector of the institution, which he had played a lot.
a life for music education
from Gutzeit also spent an important part of his career as a rector at the University of Mozarteum Salzburg, where he worked from 2006 to 2014. Sein Engagement für die Bruckner Universität blieb unvergessen, was sich auch in den Würdigungen des aktuellen ABU-Rektors Martin Rummel und des Landeshauptmanns Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) zeigt. Both emphasized the importance of his services to the institution and music training across Austria.
The Bruckner University is part of a larger network of universities that have come together under the name "Cluster Mitte". This cooperation includes the Johannes Kepler University Linz, the Catholic private university Linz, and the universities of teacher in Upper Austria and Salzburg. Together, these universities have been offering a teacher course for the secondary school since the 2016/17 studies, which is tailored to the needs of schools.
cooperation for comprehensive training
The teaching courses at Bruckner University, in particular the study program for music education, are offered in cooperation with the universities of teacher in Linz. The range of courses qualifies future teachers for teaching in the secondary level, whereby the ME studies in combination with another subject is offered. While the apprenticeship is considered attractive and demanding, the approvals for the teaching degree secondary level are not handled directly via the Bruckner University, but are carried out via other institutions.
at the MDW, the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, can be studied as a second subject. The teaching degree is divided into a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, which provide a minimum period of 12 semesters.
The optional courses enable students to design their training individually and to be prepared for the requirements of everyday school life in the best possible way. The specific requirements of the subjects are clearly defined in the specialist curricula and form an integrative whole together with the frame curriculum.
The Bruckner University has not only lost an important personality, but also a pioneer for music training in Austria, which laid the foundations for today's teacher training in the field of music education.
