Bolojan survives suspicion application - government remains stable!

Rumänien - In Romania, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan successfully survived his first motion for no confidence. The application, submitted by the right -wing populist opposition, was coordinated in parliament on July 14, 2025. Only 134 members of the ultra -right opposition parties supported the application, while the majority of the MPs boycotted the vote. The necessary minimum quorum of 233 votes that would have been necessary for the fall of the government was not achieved because a total of 398 of 464 MPs and senators were present, but only 138 made their vote.

Lower House President Sorin Grindanu from the Social Democrats said that the MPs were only present to ensure the required session quorum. This position of the MPs shows a certain exhaustion of the parliamentary process in Romania, which is partly due to the political tensions of recent years.

a savings package and the economic context

Prime Minister Bolojan, in office since June 24, 2025, had a controversial package of measures to reduce the budget deficit in the amount of 9.3% of GDP for 2024 with a question of trust. The controversy around these measures include two new value added tax rates of 11% and 21%, as well as increased consumption taxes and health insurance contributions on pensions over 3,000 Lei (approx. 600 euros). Bolojan calls for solutions instead of blockages from the opposition.
In a further development, a second savings package will be introduced to the parliament at the end of July, which is intended to provide for larger restructuring of state institutions.

The link of such laws with questions of trust is a common tactic of the Romanian government to put pressure on the parliament; This also happened in this case. According to Article 114 of the Romanian constitution, the legislative package is deemed to be passed, provided that there is no successful motion of no confidence within three days.

political conditions in Romania

This situation reflects the general political situation in Romania. Since the coalition in 2021, the country has experienced a less polarized political landscape, which, however, is faced with considerable challenges. Despite a stable parliamentary majority and a solid partnership with President Klaus Iohannis, Romania suffers from an enormous budget deficit, which is primarily spent on ongoing expenses and not for investments.

experts consider the current coalition as a priority for the upcoming elections in 2024, which questions basic reforms. Public administration has to struggle with limited capacities, while clientelism and a waste of resources further deteriorate the financial situation. International banks could request higher interest rates if the country does not soon tackle its budget problems.

Overall, the political future of Romania remains uncertain, while the government under Bolojan tries to cope with the challenges in the household and the attacking parties.
