Lightning strike triggers forest fire in Klösterle - fire brigade in action!

On the evening of June 14, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred in Klösterle, Bludenz, Vorarlberg. A lightning strike in a tree led to a surface burn that triggered excitement among the residents. Around 7.45 p.m., residents noticed smoke and firefire in the forest area below the Burtschakopf.

Shortly after the alarm, the fire brigades from Klösterle, Stuben, Wald am Arlberg and Nüziders moved. A total of around 50 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire. The police helicopter "Libelle" supported the fire brigade in exploring the site at an altitude of around 1800 meters.

fire fighting and extinguishing measures

The emergency services discovered a burning tree that had been hit directly by the flash. A surface burn with a diameter of around 1.5 meters had developed around this tree. In order to ensure effective fire fighting as quickly as possible, a "Bambi-Bucket" was used, a deposited extinguishing device that gives water out of a helicopter.

After intensive extinguishing work, the fire could be reported as deleted at 9:15 p.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident. The rapid use of the fire brigade prevented a possibly greater spread of the fire.

climatic influences on fires

As the development in Klösterle shows, lightning strikes are a common cause of fires, especially in connection with the increasing dry and heat periods, which are favored by climate change. There is also an increasing number of forest fires in Germany. In 2022, the area destroyed by fires was over 3,000 hectares, which was the highest value in the past 30 years. In 2023 the area was reduced to over 1,200 hectares, but the dangers are still real.

The most common causes of forest fires are intentional arson or negligent actions. While only 27 forest fires were due to natural causes in 2023, the concern for the environment and health by the released pollutants is great. In addition to Germany, far -reaching damage caused by fires were also documented in southern European countries, the USA and in the Amazon area, where, for example, a total of almost 37,000 forest fires were registered in the first half of 2023.

In recent years, it has been shown that forest fires not only result in space losses, but also have significant financial damage and negative effects on the environment and health of the population.

In summary, it should be noted that the lightning strike in Klösterle is exemplary for the challenges that climate change has in relation to fires. The need for effective fire fighting measures and the sensitization of the population are therefore more important than ever.
