Education chaos in Austria: Mölzer demands radical reforms!

The FPÖ's National Council, Wendelin Mölzer, spoke out on April 25, 2025 in a debate about the National Education Report 2024 and criticized the government parties. Loud ots.at He accuses the government of not taking constructive proposals from the opposition into account. Instead, these would either be postponed or only slightly modified in the education committee.

Mölzer is particularly skeptical about the skills of the Neos Minister of Education, Martin Return, who, according to Mölzer, has already failed in Vienna. It describes the Austrian education system as characterized by bureaucracy and inefficient structures, which is shown in a mismatch between high means of funds and a mediocre result. These problems mean that around 10% of students and Vienna even attend 30% of private schools in Austria, a worrying sign of education, says Mölzer.

Inequalities in the education system

Educational inequalities have been a central topic in Austrian education policy for years. An analysis that deals with these inequalities between 2012 and 2022 illustrates that social origin already led to significant differences in education in the education before corona pandemic. These inequalities have increased due to the corona -related school closings and the current inflation crisis, as a report of the Workers' Chamber of Vienna shows.

Three essential findings from the analysis are:

  • Persistente Bildungsungleichheiten nach sozialer Herkunft.
  • Intensivierung sozialer Nachteile im Krisenkontext, die zu einer erneuten Erhöhung der Unterschiede führt.
  • Mangelnde Umsetzung von Maßnahmen zur Überwindung sozialer Ungleichheit im Schulsystem.

These results are closely related to the demands of Mölzer, which indicates the need to ensure equal opportunities, especially for pupils from socio -economically disadvantaged layers. The challenges are immense, especially in urban areas, where many parents cannot afford private schools.

Influence factors on educational success

In order to shed light on the causes of inequalities in the education system, a diploma thesis examined which factors influence the educational success of children from educational disadvantaged layers with a migration background. The qualitative analysis included interviews with parents, children, teachers and directors and shows that educational success does not depend solely on the social shift. For example, considerable differences within the group of socio -economically disadvantaged children were found.

Influencing factors are:
- The school experiences of mothers.
- the self -confidence and commitment of the parents.
- Prejudices of the teachers as well as parental language skills and the transmission of language in the family.
- The presence of successful older siblings.

This comprehensive context illustrates that not only the structural problems have to be addressed to improve the education system in Austria, but also the specific challenges that arise from social inequalities. Without an honest examination of the causes, as Mölzer warns, progress in the education system is hardly to be expected.
