Atus Velden celebrates sensational doubles: championship and ascent!
In Carinthian football there is reason to celebrate. The Atus Velden, under the direction of coach Marcel Kuster, won the championship in the Carinthian league and secured the promotion to the regional league with an impressive lead of 22 points. This already marks the third ascent for the fighting team within four years. The 1B team, which is trained under Christoph Rabitsch, can also look back on an excellent season. This team has not lost a single game and consists almost exclusively of local players. With the promotion from the 2nd to the 1st grade, the 1B team also achieved significant success. Both teams made the climb in the same year, which is considered an exceptional performance for football in Carinthia.
The celebrations for the rise of the ATUS Velden took place in the presence of around 650 spectators who experienced the historical moment together
The discussion about promotion to the 3rd league
The regional league currently consists of five seasons, which argue about the four promotion places in the 3rd league. The masters of the Regionalliga West and Southwest rise directly, while the other promotion places are distributed between the regional north, northeast and Bavaria. There is a rotation in direct promotion places, while the other masters fight for the remaining space in promotion play-offs. This regulation was decided at the DFB Federal Day 2019 and came into force at the beginning of the 2020/2021 season.
challenges and reform proposals
The situation is perceived as unfair by many clubs, especially the teams from the Regionalliga Northeast feel disadvantaged. The majority of the regional league clubs therefore call for a fundamental reform that should enable all masters to rise directly. The relegation, which is currently being held between the master teams, leads to sporting and economic uncertainties. This puts the affected clubs under pressure in the cadre planning and the acquisition of sponsors.
Different suggestions for reform were discussed, including the increase in the third division from 20 to 22 teams, to enable all regional league masters the direct climb, as well as a better distribution of the fixed promotion places through annual rotation. The current location remains controversial and a topic in German football.
Some of the relegation games that take place on May 28th and June 1, 2025 could further heat this discourse and ensure that the demands for a reform become louder. Meanwhile, the final day of amateurs on May 24, 2025, in which all 21 state cup endgames are played, also drawn attention to the lower leagues.
The Atus Velden and the discussions about the promotion of advancement show how different the football realities in Austria and Germany are. While one club celebrates success, others have to fight for fairer conditions.
