Amazon announces radical AI revolution: 1.5 million employees are concerned!
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced on June 18, 2025, in a surprising announcement, changes in the company's workforce, which are caused by the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI). It is expected that the number of office workers will drop in the future, while the demand for specialized specialists will increase. Despite these changes, Jassy clarifies that the company does not want to make any massive layoffs, as in 2022 and 2023, and instead want to leave freely vacant positions. Nevertheless, he does not rule out that personnel cuts can continue to meet the new requirements. Amazon currently employs around 1.5 million people worldwide, including around 350,000 in administrative positions.
As part of this AI transformation, a new department for agent artificial intelligence (Agentic AI) is also founded. This department, under the direction of Swami Sivasubramanian, aims to develop software that can make decisions autonomously. This happens with minimal human intervention to automate different life aspects and corporate processes. According to Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, Agentic Ai has the potential to become a billion dollar business area. For example, this technology could be able to monitor stocks or to trigger orders autonomously, which could significantly increase operational efficiency. An example of this technology is the updated version of Alexa, *Alexa+ *, which will be available for selected customers in the course of the month.
investments in AI and training
To support the upcoming changes, Amazon is investing around $ 10 billion in a new AI and training center in North Carolina. This project includes the expansion of technical infrastructures and cooperation with universities and training centers. Comprehensive training and retraining programs are planned, with the aim of creating new job profiles that arise in the course of the AI transformation. Amazon expects this initiative to create at least 500 new direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs in the region.
The effects of artificial intelligence on the labor market are not uncontroversial. Forecasts show that AI arouses both fears of job losses and hopes for new fields of activity. A study by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy documents that only 6 % of companies in Germany have used artificial intelligence by 2019, which illustrates the slow introduction of AI technologies in many areas.
The change on the job market
progress in the field of artificial intelligence are important drivers of change in the world of work. These technologies can complement, replace human work or even open up new fields of activity. In the United States and Europe, it is estimated that up to 300 million full -time jobs could be at risk from AI. Activities that require creativity or interpersonal interaction are less affected. A broad introduction of AI could reduce the shortage of skilled workers, but also carries risks such as increased workload.
According to the assessments of the industry, the need for a regulatory framework to take advantage of opportunities and minimize risks is of central importance. In June 2023, the EU Parliament passed a AI law that defines different risk levels from AI. In view of these developments, it remains to be observed how the labor market will change in the coming years through artificial intelligence.
