Vienna sets signs for Queere Culture: New Center in Ramperstorffergasse!
Ramperstorffergasse 39, 1050 Wien, Österreich - Vienna sets a strong sign for queer culture! The city has decided on the financial support for a new center for queer history and culture, which will open on June 11th. Cultural City Councilor Veronica Kaup-Hasler from the SPÖ recently visited the construction site of the Qwien Center in Vienna-Margaret. Accompanied by Thomas Weber, the LGBTIQ spokesman for the Neos Vienna, she was enthusiastic about the progress and dimensions of the new location at Ramperstorffergasse 39. "The Qwienzentrum is developing into a unique queer history and cultural center in Austria!", Emphasized Kaup-Hasler, while the opposition demands more transparency when using the funding.
The Qwien was originally founded in 2009 as a library and history center and received its new name in 2019. It will offer an extensive library, lectures and exhibitions on the National Socialist persecution of homosexuals and transpersonen. In order to convey the prominent queer history of Vienna, city walks are also planned. The ÖVP proves to be a critic of the project and demands clear guidelines for the use of funding, since there are currently hardly any control mechanisms in order to make these expenses transparent, as ÖVP councilor Michael Gorlitzer explained.
cultural heritage in Vienna in focus
Vienna, as a cultural natural heritage and historical center, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001, plays a central role in European history. The city, which once started as a Roman military camp, has developed into a cultural hub. The historical center comprises around 1,600 objects and illustrates three key periods of European development: the Middle Ages, the Baroque and the Wilhelminian era. Particularly noteworthy is Vienna's reputation as a musical capital, which was shaped by sizes such as Mozart and Beethoven. The historical center is currently experiencing growing challenges through urban development developments; The construction project at Heumarkt is on the red list of the endangered world heritage, which threatens the universal value of the city.
