Greiner relies on circular economy: recycling as the key to the future!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - Greiner AG relies on a circular economy and has always established itself as a pioneer in sustainability. As part of the global recycling day, a global day of action to promote recycling, the company illustrates its commitment and the high relevance of recycling for the environment. As Konrad Wasserbauer, Global Director Circular Economy & Sustainability, emphasizes: "Recycling ensures that plastic packaging does not end as a waste, but are preserved as a valuable resource." This year, which was characterized by economic challenges, the focus is on the sustainable transformation.
The global group of companies, which consists of Greiner Packaging, Greiner Bio-One and Neveon, has not lost ambitions in 2023 to 2.1 billion euros (compared to 2.3 billion euros in the previous year). Ceo Saori Dubourg explains that Greiner is still willing to position itself as a sustainable global player and to advance the switch to circulatory products, even if the market is difficult, as the online portal NIVEON.com reports.

commitment to sustainable products

In the 2023 financial year, Greiner invested a total of 138 million euros in innovations and sustainable measures, which corresponds to 6.5 percent of sales. These investments mainly flowed in Europe, with almost half of which were made in Austria. Despite a general decline in demand, the packaging division Greiner Packaging has proven resistance and achieved sales of 845 million euros. A significant step was to acquire a recycling plant in Serbia in 2022 to reduce the use of flasty and to secure access to recyclates.

The medical division Greiner Bio-One also tries to expand the sustainability goals. This focuses on innovative concepts such as the reuse of polystyrene waste. In addition, Neveon, the foam division, initiated a collaboration with Brantner Green Solutions to found a mattress recycling company in Austria, which is considered an essential measure to avoid waste. Carolin-Luise Picht emphasizes the urgency: "We as Neveon still deal with this topic to save mattresses from burning."

The focus on circular economy and resource conservation has the goal of becoming completely circulating by 2030. This means not only a rethink in production, but also the promotion of innovations and the creation of products that require reusability and recycling. At a time when society is increasingly focusing on environmental awareness, the role of companies like Greiner is becoming increasingly decisive in order to promote positive changes.
