On April 17, 2025, there was an incident in the Vienna City Park that makes both the dangers of alcohol abuse and the associated violent acts clear. A 22-year-old alcoholic man was arrested after sexually harassing a 24-year-old woman. An alcohol test resulted in an alarming value of 3 per thousand. The aggression of the perpetrator also led to injuries to two other people: a 16-year-old by hand and a 23-year-old on the head.
The arrested threatened the 23-year-old with a folding knife, while he acted aggressively towards the police emergency services and did not follow the instructions. As a result, the police had to use physical violence to get control of the situation. In the course of the arrest, a folding knife and a vodka bottle were ensured, which underline the perpetrator's aggression potential.
The role of alcohol abuse
alcohol abuse is a decisive factor in the development of violence, both in domestic and public space. According to the Federal Office for Health (BAG) are around 50 percent of all analyzed violence in public spaces. The serious social consequences of alcohol abuse make it clear that the problem has far -reaching effects. Civil acts often occur on the weekend, with mainly men in the age groups from 19-24 and 25-34 years as perpetrators.

A reduction in the problematic drinking alcohol could therefore contribute to reducing violence in public space.
