Forstau celebrates the first Krampus Run: A huge success for the anniversary!

In a spectacular start to the winter season, the “Totenstoan Teufeln” held the first Krampus Run in Forstau on November 22, 2024, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary. Chairman Niklas Kocher was enthusiastic after the premiere: "We are very satisfied with the 1st Forstau Krampus Run! The atmosphere was great and the feedback was consistently positive," reported Kocher. Around 30 helpers, alongside the 11 active members of the Krampuspass, ensured everything ran smoothly, and Kocher particularly thanked the Forstau Volunteer Fire Department for their support. Ganz ohne Zwischenfälle blieb die Veranstaltung ebenfalls: „Alle Sicherheitsmaßnahmen haben gut funktioniert“, so Kocher.

The Krampus celebrations are deeply rooted in Alpine folklore, where Krampus is considered the dark opponent of St. Nicholas. This tradition culminates in Krampusnacht on December 5th, where in many cities in Austria, especially in the Alpine regions, young men parade through the streets in scary costumes. Diese Paraden sind sowohl für Einheimische als auch für Touristen ein aufregendes Erlebnis. The costumes, which often take several months to make by hand, are artfully designed and add to the fascination that Krampus celebrations create. How Vienna Times reported, the costumes are often heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation, making the celebration a significant part of cultural heritage.

Insight into the Krampus tradition

The joy and thrill of the Krampus Runs offer an impressive change from traditional Christmas celebrations. Krampus himself embodies the interplay of good and evil and reminds the community of important values such as respect and gratitude. Kocher was optimistic about possible future Krampus runs in Forstau: “Yes, we are thinking about having the Krampus run take place regularly!” This enthusiasm could further consolidate the tradition and make it tangible not only in Forstau, but also in the entire region.
