Fireworks accidents in St. Georgen und Kerpen: Large of fire brigade!
A devastating fire in St. Georgen and a dramatic incident in Kerpen on New Year's Eve demanded the fire and the police's attention. In St. Georgen, there was a "Troadkasten" and an adjacent carport on fire in the early evening, with the flames attacking the roof of a house in which a family was with four children. Fortunately, the residents were already outdoors and remained unharmed. A total of seven volunteers were on site with 103 emergency services, which despite their commitment could not prevent the residential building and the carport from burning. The cause of the fire and the amount of the damage is not yet known, as reported.

In Kerpen, too, the emergency services had to fight for a fire that may have been triggered by fired New Year's rockets. On December 31 at 4:20 p.m., the fire broke out on a balcony on the ground floor of an apartment building in Kerpen-Horrem. When the fire brigade arrived, the balcony was already in full fire and there was a risk that the flames spread to the upper floors. Thanks to a targeted extinguishing attack, this could be prevented. Surprisingly, the residents of the affected apartment and the upper floors were not at home, nobody was injured. After the control, the tenants were able to return to their apartments, although the ground floor apartment remains uninhabitable. The police and fire brigade take measures to clarify the cause of the fire, such as Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported.
Overall, it was a New Year's Eve that was overshadowed by numerous incidents despite the festive atmosphere. The State Fire Brigade Association of Styria, for example, recorded 15 hedge and meadow fires nationwide, which were probably caused by fireworks. The emergency services were on alert to meet the challenges of New Year's Eve.
