Vienna Opera Ball 2025: A festival full of splendor and security!

The Vienna Opera Ball 2025, the magnificent event in a class of its own, is just around the corner. This evening, February 27th, the Vienna State Opera will be the glamorous backdrop for the social event, which will attract over 5,000 guests. It is not only an important cultural event, but also a mammoth organizational task for the Vienna police, who are preparing for the celebrations with an impressive security concept. “Through their efforts, the police officers make a significant contribution to the success of the Opera Ball,” explained Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, who evaluated the preparations on site together with State Police President Gerhard Pürstl ots.at reported.

Despite a tense security situation in Europe following the terrorist attacks last year, there is no concrete threat to Austria. To ensure the safety of the guests, several hundred police officers are on duty, as well as experts from the Cobra task force and special units. The focus is on preventing possible riots while maintaining the festive nature of the ball. MyDistrict highlights the anticipation of the ball, which is taking place for the first time this year after the death of the famous builder Richard “Mörtel” Lugner.

Stars and political celebrities

The question of whether the Opera Ball will still have the same splendor after Lugner's death hovers in the air. The evening sees fewer stars, but an impressive political presence. Among the guests are Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, interim Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg and Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig, who will appear on the red carpet with Eduard Strauss, a descendant of Waltz King Johann Strauss. Despite the challenges, the Lugner family is not bringing a Hollywood star with them this year, but rather the American DJ Alec Monopoly, whose works have already been appreciated by many celebrities.

A total of around 5,150 ball guests are expected, including 160 debutante couples and 150 musicians. The ball is being celebrated to mark the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss, and a special highlight is the new choreography for the Imperial Waltz under the direction of ballet director Martin Schläpfer. Tickets cost 395 euros, of which 35 euros will be donated to charity, while box prices have increased by up to 1,000 euros. On this evening, the Vienna Opera Ball presents itself as both a VIP tent full of glamor and as a scene of important social developments.
