Zelensky follows Trump's script for Europe's elites
EU countries have to invest more in security
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj asked the European countries to invest as much as to their security as is actually necessary - and not just as much as they are used to in years of neglect. "If it requires 5 % of GDP to secure defense, then 5 %," said Selenskyj. This claim makes the former US President Donald Trump think, but is not of him.
Selenskyj's criticism of European defense
Selenskyj was aimed at the European Elite at the World Economic Forum and criticized the nations that Ukraine has supported since the Russian invasion by blaming them not to take their own defense and the threat of Moscow seriously enough. Trump's return to the office has led Selenskyj to re -evaluate the situation and confidently focus on his own interests.
The reaction to Trump
Selenskyj obviously observed Trump's press conference, in which he confirmed his demand that the NATO countries should increase their defense expenditure from 2 % to 5 % of GDP. This will be almost impossible for most states in the Europe, which is characterized by slow growth, but could be regarded as opening officers.
The challenges for Ukraine
For Selenskyj it is wise to win Trump's favor because he needs the support of the US President for Peace to secure the best possible conditions for Ukraine. However, this could be a sobering lesson for the Europeans, as they are still dependent on their military and diplomatic support for Kiev. Ukraine has learned that the Russian invasion signals a new, aggressive threat to the east that requires a more robust western defense strategy. And when Trump is in the White House, there is no guarantee that the USA is still ready to help.
future of European-American relationships
"Will President Trump take note of Europe at all? Does NATO consider NATO to be necessary? And will he respect the EU institutions?" Asked Selenskyj. In his opinion, Europe has to learn how to take care of your security independently so that the world cannot ignore it. This message will be difficult to digest in Brussels, especially in the face of the extensive military and diplomatic help that Ukraine Europe has been given in the past three years.
Europe's own security policy
Selenskyj's true intention became obvious when he expressed: "At the moment it is unclear whether Europe will have a place at the table when the war ends against our country." Ukraine needs a strong, united Europe, because Trump could be trying to give Putin everything he wants, just to end the war. The 47th President has finally strived for a Nobel Peace Prize for a long time.
"I think Selenskyj is trying to give Europe backbone, and that needs that," said Beth Sanner, a former manager of the US intelligence services. These words make it clear that it is time that Europe's states are determined to maintain their own security and geopolitical interests in the region.
