Sub -sea cable damaged: suspicion of Russian sabotage is growing!
In an alarming incident, several submarine cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea area. Russian authorities have now confirmed that their telecommunications cable is affected by external influence. The state -owned company Rostelekom announced in Moscow that repair work is underway and that the incident had no impact on customers, as the Ria Nowosti news agency reported. The damage has been observed since December 27, 2024 when there was first reports about torn cables in Finland's exclusive economic zone.
At the same time it became known that three other communication cables between Finland and Estonia suffered damage on December 26, 2024. These impairments were reported by the Finnish Transport and Communication Authority (Traficom). Jarkko Saarimäki, the general director of Traficom, said that the cable cuts had so far had no significant effects on the services of the telecommunications operators. Nevertheless, it was found that in some cases the connections could slow down, while the operators assured that their networks are sufficiently dimensioned to cope with such situations.
suspicion of sabotage
It is particularly worrying that the damage to the submarine cables is associated with activities of ships that are assigned to Russia's shadow fleet, including the tanker "Eagle S". This has led to increased marine patrols on the part of the NATO, in the Baltic Sea, since sabotage files are suspected. The Finnish radio broadcaster Yle reports that the repair work on the damaged cables is expected to take a week and that a second Russian cable that runs in parallel was also injured.
Estonia's Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets commented on the situation and emphasized the severity of the problem for all Baltic nations. It is particularly questionable that the incidents are often connected to ships that have connections to Russia and China, as is emphasized by observers. This shows that the infrastructural challenges in the region have to be taken seriously in order to avoid future disorders, reported Yle.fi .
