Trump warns Selenskyj: raw material agreements must not fail!

Vienna, Österreich - On March 31, 2025, Donald Trump urgently warned the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj from withdrawal from the planned raw material agreement between the USA and Ukraine. In a statement in front of journalists on the presidential aircraft Air Force One, Trump emphasized that Selenskyj's possible intention to get out of the agreement on rare earths was problematic. On March 20, Trump himself announced that it would soon sign the raw material agreement to regulate access to Ukrainian minerals and rare earths. These resources are not only of strategic importance, but should also secure the financial support of the USA to Ukraine.

The raw material agreement stipulates that the USA and Ukraine together promote mineral raw materials, whereby 50 percent of the income is to flow into a common reconstruction. Ukraine has an estimated raw material reserves worth over 14 trillion euros, including significant lithium, titanium and gallium. Despite the strategic importance of these resources, negotiations on the agreement began to stop due to a previous scandal in the White House. Trump and Vice President JD Vance had accused Selenskyj disrespect and a lack of gratitude for US military aid, which caused unrest in both Washington and Kyjiw. Selenskyj, however, had confirmed his willingness to sign the agreement.

The value of the Ukrainian soil treasures

Ukraine has significant reserves of raw materials that are indispensable for modern technologies. According to current estimates, Ukraine has around 500,000 tons of unused lithium, which is about a third of the European reserves. But the mineral deposits, hydrocarbons such as oil and natural gas as well as significant occurrence of Germaniums also play an important role. The Ukraine has around 22 of the 34 raw materials that are listed in the EU Act on Critical Raw Materials.

However, a large part of these raw materials lies in areas occupied by Russia. The Ukrainian Prime Minister Deny Shmygal said that around 40 percent of metals are checked in these areas. President Selenskyj expressed that Russia claims around 20 percent of Ukrainian off -road treasures. This makes the situation in terms of raw material promotion not only an economic but also a security policy challenge.

security guarantees and international relationships

In the political discussion about the agreement, the lack of explicit security guarantees by the United States was clearly criticized for Ukraine. Selenskyj has emphasized that the lack of such guarantees is an important point to ensure long -term security for Ukraine. Trump sees the signing of the agreement a way to guarantee the USA a repayment of $ 350 billion in financial support, which was only $ 83.4 billion since 2022.

In the past few days, representatives of the United States have had talks with Russia and Ukraine, in which a possible fire break was discussed in the conflict and especially with regard to the energy infrastructure in the Black Sea. There was an agreement on a 30-day ceasefire, but Moscow set conditions for implementation.

In summary, it can be said that the geopolitical tensions, the resources of Ukraine and the relationship with the USA are of critical importance in this phase. While Trump sees the agreement as a large business, there are concerns about possible extortion on the part of the United States in Ukraine. Both sides are faced with the challenge of finding an agreement that could lead to a stable peace both the raw material resources and the security interests of Ukraine.
