Trump: Talks with Putin - is peace in Ukraine finally coming?

The US President Donald Trump has announced that it will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in order to promote the efforts to end the Ukraine War. According to Trump, there is the possibility that there could be news until Tuesday after talking to journalists to Washington during a flight from Florida. He emphasized that “land and power plants” would be discussed and added that large parts of the discussions would be about area claims. As the Bloomberg news agency reported, Trump is optimistic about the result of these conversations and explained that important preparatory work has already been done.

The upcoming conversation could be a turning point in the conflict. Trump, who already bragged with his contacts to Putin during his election campaign, hopes for a quick peace solution and sees himself able to end the war within 24 hours. In the run -up to the conversation, however, there were concerns among the European allies who fear that Trump is aiming for a peace regulation that could favor Russia. This is considered a potential risk, since Ukraine and its supporters fear that such an agreement could result in Russia as the winner, while the losses and the suffering of the Ukrainian people may not be recognized sufficiently.

The reactions and political implications

Additional concerns are awakened by the new US policy, which, among other things, provides for an agreement on the exploitation of rare earths in Ukraine. This development is perceived as worrying in Ukraine and many EU countries, since it is interpreted in the eyes of many as a kind of compensation for the previously support of the USA. According to AP News, it remains to be seen how the talks between Trump and Putin will affect the geopolitical landscape, in particular in view of the continuing military control of Russia over large parts of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict three years ago.

The political stage is excited while Trump is trying to drive his trading plans forward and at the same time re -evaluate the tense relationships with Europe and Ukraine. It remains to be seen whether Trump actually has the ability to withstand the criticism of his allies and find a diplomatic solution, while he continues his strategy for April 2 with regard to tariffs, which adds an additional dimension to ongoing political negotiations.
