2024: The hottest year of history - alarm level red for our climate!
Alarming forecasts: 2024 will be the hottest year ever!
The world is on the edge of a climate catastrophe! The Copernicus Climate Change Service, the climate monitoring of the European Union, raises the alarm: 2024 becomes the hottest year with absolute certainty that humanity has ever experienced! An unprecedented heat boost caused the global temperatures between January and November so much that in 2023 was put in the shade.
"It is practically certain that 2024 will be the warmest year in history," the EU agency announced in its current monthly report. This is not just a number - it is a wake -up call for all of humanity!
a critical point exceeded
The year 2024 will be the first calendar year in which the temperatures are more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above the values before the industrial revolution. This brand is crucial to protect our planet from dangerous overheating. Scientists warn urgently: exceeding this border for several decades would have catastrophic consequences for the earth.
The alarming data comes from billions of measurements that were collected with satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations. Copernicus' records go back to 1940, but other data sources such as ice drilling nuclei and tree rings provide information on the climatic conditions of the past 125,000 years.
The past November has been the second warmth of November since the beginning of the records, and in Portugal the hottest November of all time was experienced - the average temperature was 2.69 degrees Celsius above the average from 1981 to 2010!
the world in the wrong way
The international community has undertaken as part of the Paris climate protection agreement to limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius. But the reality looks bleak: the United Nations warn that we are heading for a catastrophic increase of 3.1 degrees Celsius! The CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels continue to rise, despite global promises, promote the exit from coal, oil and gas.
Extreme weather events are increasing - this year there were devastating floods in Spain and Kenya, violent tropical storms in the USA and on the Philippines as well as heavy drought and forest fires in South America. The situation is serious!
At the UN climate conferences in November, wealthy countries have promised $ 300 billion a year until 2035-a sum that is criticized as completely inadequate. The time to act is urged!
