OMV terminates gas delivery contract with Gazprom: What does that mean for the future?
The OMV has finally pulled the ripcord: With immediate effect, the Austrian energy group cancels the gas supply contract with the Russian provider Gazprom. In an official announcement by Gashub.at, it was confirmed that OMV Gas Marketing & Trading GmbH (OGMT) takes this step due to "fundamental contractual violations" by Gazprom. Since November 16, 2024, 6:00 a.m. CET, no natural gas has been flowing over the said contract, which was crucial for this radical decision.
uncertain future because of delivery stop
But the situation is complex. Alfred Stern, the CEO of the OMV, said in a conversation with the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" that it is currently uncertain whether the delivery stop has been permanent since mid -November. He emphasized: "You can't rule out anything." The contract with Gazprom officially runs until 2040, but since the delivery stop has been on the brink of the future of business relationships. Including this tense situation is an existing legal dispute between the two companies that explains the background of the stop.
During the gas market in Europe remains restless and many providers are trying to do diversification, the OMV, as one of the last great buyers of Russian natural gas, has a particularly challenging position. Stern added that the OMV should use all legally possible energy sources as long as there are no sanctions. The company's strategic decisions could have far -reaching effects on energy supply in Austria, while the uncertainties in the contracts and the market do not decrease.
