Despite economic setbacks and challenges, Austria remains a hotspot for innovation! In 2024, the Austrian Patent Office recorded a total of 2,231 invention applications, with Upper Austria once again taking the lead with 503 technical innovations. Styria follows with 451 inventions, while Vienna achieved an impressive increase of 13.5% to 395 registrations ots.at and patentamt.at report. Interest in inventions per capita is evident in Vorarlberg, which has the highest registration rate.
Leading the way in registrations is the Styrian company AVL List with 192 submissions, followed by Julius Blum and Zumtobel Lighting. The Vienna University of Technology leads the higher education sector with 18 patent applications. Stefan Harasek, President of the Patent Office, is optimistic: “In difficult economic times, it is important to remain creative and invest in the future.” New developments in trademark protection also show that Austrian entrepreneurs are becoming increasingly active: in 2024, 4,441 national trademarks were registered, many of them from Vienna.

The positive developments are not just limited to patents; The number of design registrations also rose by 26.67% to 361 in 2024. The focus on future technologies is also particularly noteworthy. Austria ranks eighth in Europe for research and development, and patent applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing and robotics have increased sixfold since 2010. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler praised the country's innovative strength, although the total number of international registrations in Austria fell by 2%.
