Lower Saxony strives to become Europe's hydrogen center, with a comprehensive core network and decisive infrastructure projects.
Lower Saxony is hydrogen hotspot: 9,000 km of new lines are planned
Hydrogen, the future energy source, is facing a turning point! Lower Saxony has the chance to become the heart of the hydrogen economy in Europe, thanks to the latest approval for a nationwide hydrogen kernel network. Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) confirmed the decision of the Federal Network Agency with the words: "We very much welcome this decision." Economic Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) sees this development a golden opportunity for Lower Saxony.
In Lower Saxony, crucial locations for hydrogen production are set up. The energy market is to be revolutionized - from Emden to Lingen, large -scale production facilities are created. Hydrogen is imported from abroad from the ports in Wilhelmshaven and Stade. Innovative is the attempt by the energy group Uniper to save hydrogen in a converted former natural gas cavern in Krummhörn, with the ambitious target brand of 600 gigawatt hours of capacity until the end of 2023. Hydrogen could be the future of the climate-friendly energy market.
9,000 kilometers of hydrogen motorway should be in 2032
The planning is huge: a 9,040 kilometer long "hydrogen motorway" is to form the German hydrogen network, from which Lower Saxony provides over 1,800 kilometers. Environment Minister Christian Meyer (Greens) describes approval as a "significant step for the energy transition and the transformation of industry". Almost 60 percent of the lines can use old gas pipes, while the rest must be relocated. The complete commissioning of the hydrogen network is planned for 2032, but partial routes can go into operation beforehand!
Hydrogen represents a climate -friendly alternative to fossil fuels. With this infrastructure, Lower Saxony becomes the spearhead of the German hydrogen turn! The fight against the climate crisis goes into the next round.
