New US missile base in Poland: security or provocation for Russia?
The US has opened a new missile defense system in northern Poland, located in the small town of Redzikowo on the Baltic Sea. This military facility, inaugurated on November 13, is part of NATO's comprehensive missile defense shield and has been planned since the 2000s. The opening comes amid rising tensions with Russia, which sees the base as a threat and claims it is an attempt to push the U.S. military presence closer to its borders.
Poland, concerned about the safety of its citizens after Donald Trump's election victory, said the base's opening underscores its unshakable military alliance with the United States, regardless of who is in the White House. The location is only 250 km from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which illustrates the strategic importance of the base. “It took a while, but this construction demonstrates the geostrategic will of the United States,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in a video.
Reactions from the Kremlin
The Kremlin reacted sharply to the opening, describing the new military base as part of a strategy aimed at containing Russia militarily. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Russia would take measures to ensure “parity,” but gave no details. These developments cast a shadow over NATO strategy, which member states view as purely defensive.
The base in Redzikowo is part of the Aegis Ashore system, aimed at intercepting ballistic missiles. While NATO emphasizes that the defense is only aimed at threats from the Middle East, experts fear that a reorientation of radar would be necessary to intercept missiles from Russia. Amid these geopolitical tensions, support for Ukraine is also being discussed, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken talks to NATO and EU officials about future aid as Trump pushes forward with his own plans to end the conflict in Ukraine.
