New pilgrimage: Vía Rusadir connects Melilla with Santiago de Compostela!
Melilla, Spanien - The Spanish enclave Melilla on the Moroccan coast opened the first official Jakobsweg route outside of Europe: Via Rusadir. This historical opening, which took place on March 20, was celebrated by Juan José Imbroda, the President of Melilla, and Alfonso Rueda, the President of Galicia. A central ceremony included the unveiling of a stone signpost, which is equipped with the typical symbols of the Jakobsweg, the scallop and the yellow arrow. This leads pilgrims to the only Gothic church in Africa, the Santiago chapel in Melilla. The distance from Melilla to Santiago de Compostela is exactly 972.09 kilometers, as a badge on the sign announces. Pilgrims can now also have their official pilgrimage cards stamped in the Melilla lighthouse, such as the Kathpress reported.
new flight connection from Melilla to Santiago de Compostela
In addition, a direct flight connection between Melilla and Santiago de Compostela was opened, which is operated by the airline Air Nostrum. The first flight to take off on Saturday expects an occupancy of over 70% and offers space for 56 passengers in Melilla and 30 passengers for the return flight. With flights every Saturday until August 31, not only the travel options for Melilla's residents should be expanded, but tourism from Galicia should also be funded to the city. This new connection is the ninth route that Air Nostrum offers from Melilla this season, which significantly strengthens the flight connections and underlines Melilla's tourist potential, as aviación digital reported. The opening of Via Rusadir and the introduction of the new flight connection collapses in time and testify to the existing cultural and historical connections between Spain and Africa. Melilla remains such an important hub that now adds a new chapter to the historical pilgrim roads in Europe and at the same time facilitates access to the traditional routes on the Iberian Peninsula.
